  • Eligible current document

You must currently have a permanent residence permit (type II or IV), an asylum residence permit (type III), or a regular temporary residence permit (type I) without a temporary residence purpose. • Qualifying residence

Normally, you must have lived in the Netherlands with a valid Dutch residence permit for at least five consecutive years. Half of any earlier years on a study permit count; years on another permit for a temporary purpose do not count. The IND also sets out alternatives for current European Blue Card holders and says a current permanent residence permit holder can apply immediately.

  • Limits on absences

Under the usual five-year Dutch residence requirement, no absence from the Netherlands may exceed six consecutive months and total absences may not exceed ten months. The IND states different limits for its European Blue Card alternatives: no absence longer than 12 consecutive months and no more than 18 months in total from the relevant territory.
