    If you will work as a spiritual counsellor, you must work for a religious or ideological organisation meeting the IND’s additional requirements for solvency, continuity and reliability. You must pass the Civic Integration Exam Abroad or be exempt, unless you do not require an MVV or your work is not public. The organisation must register you with DUO within 4 weeks after you receive the permit, ensure you accept DUO’s integration offer, and give you time and opportunity to integrate.

    In addition to the spiritual counsellor conditions, if you will work as a religious education teacher or minister, you must work as a minister of a religion or in a job important to the organisation, for which special education, knowledge or experience is needed.

    If you work in the supply of goods by a foreign company, you must assemble or repair machines, devices or software, or train others to use the supplied goods or software. The goods must be made in your country of origin; you must have the specific knowledge needed and have been permanently employed by the supplier for at least 1 year. The goods must be worth more than the work costs, your salary must be at the standard market rate, and the Netherlands job must last no more than 1 year.

How it works

  1. Get ready

    • Check the permit conditions

      Check the general, income and employer requirements, plus any extra conditions for your job.

    • Collect your documents

      Use the application form to identify the documents needed and have official foreign documents legalised and translated into Dutch, English, French or German.

  2. Apply

    • Submit the application

      The IND advises having your employer apply in writing by post; if you need an MVV, your employer applies for it and the GVVA together, although you may apply yourself at a Dutch embassy or consulate abroad.

    • Pay the application fee

      Follow the payment instructions in the IND’s letter; an employer who pays the application fee may not charge it to you.

    • Wait for the decision

      The IND obtains UWV advice on employment-market requirements and sends its decision in a letter.

  3. Visa

    • Arrange your MVV sticker if required

      If your application includes an MVV and is approved, make an appointment at the Dutch embassy or consulate named in the application within 3 months of the decision; your passport must have at least 6 months’ validity when the sticker is placed in it.

  4. Travel

    • Travel to the Netherlands

      If you require an MVV, you can travel to the Netherlands with it; the IND says it is valid for 90 days.

  5. Settle in

    • Collect your GVVA

      When the IND says the permit is ready, make an appointment to collect the residence document and additional document; do not start work until you have received both.

      If you said in your application that you would take a TB test, make an appointment with the public health service within 3 months after receiving your GVVA and take the IND referral appendix.
