Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit: jobs that qualify

Which jobs qualify for Ireland's Critical Skills Employment Permit, the 2026 salary thresholds in euro and naira, fees, Stamp 4 and spouse work rights.

Ireland's Critical Skills Employment Permit is the country's main route for skilled professionals, and it comes with real perks: no job advertising test, a working spouse and a path to Stamp 4. The catch is that only certain jobs qualify, and the salary floor went up in March 2026. Here is how to tell if your job is one of them.

The two ways a job can qualify

There are two routes, and your job only needs to fit one of them. The figures below are the ones the Department of Enterprise publishes on its permit page, following the salary increases it announced in December 2025 to take effect from 1 March 2026.

RouteWhat you needMinimum salary
Listed occupationA job on the Critical Skills Occupations List and a relevant degree or higher€40,904 a year
Listed occupation, recent graduateAs above, with your qualification awarded in the 12 months before you apply€36,848 a year
Any other occupationA job not on the Ineligible List of Occupations, with the right experience if you have no degreeOver €68,911 a year

The listed route was €38,000 before the March 2026 change. The department says further rises will be phased in through to 2030, with amounts to be set after annual review, so expect the numbers to move again.

There is one more rule for public sector roles covered by a national pay agreement, such as many health service jobs: the minimum is the rate set in that agreement rather than the figures above.

In naira, using the Central Bank of Nigeria's official euro rate of ₦1,505.85 on 22 October 2026, €40,904 is about ₦61.6 million a year, €36,848 is about ₦55.5 million and €68,911 is about ₦103.8 million. Rates change daily, so treat these as a rough guide.

Jobs on the Critical Skills Occupations List

The list is short and specific. A job title alone is not enough: the role has to match the occupation description. Some of the groups Nigerians most often ask about:

ICT. Programmers and software development professionals, web design and development professionals, IT business analysts, architects and systems designers, IT project and programme managers, IT specialist managers, and "all other ICT professionals not elsewhere classified".

Engineering. Civil, structural and site engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and electronics, design and development, and production and process engineers in named specialisms such as chip design, process automation, and power generation and distribution. Chemical engineers and project engineers are listed too.

Health. Medical practitioners, registered nurses, registered midwives, pharmacists, radiographers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, dieticians, medical scientists and several physiologist roles, as well as PHECC registered paramedics.

Finance and business. Chartered and certified accountants and tax experts in named areas, plus business analysts, actuaries, economists and statisticians who specialise in big data analytics.

Construction and property. Architects, quantity surveyors, land and geomatics surveyors, construction project managers and BIM coordinators.

The list also includes some scientists, social workers, and animation and games roles. Read the official list before you assume your job is on it. In May 2026 the department confirmed 32 changes to jobs eligible for employment permits, including 6 for Critical Skills, so lists from old blog posts can be wrong.

What it looks like in real life

Tunde, a software developer in Lagos. He has a computer science degree and five years of backend experience. A Dublin fintech offers him a 2-year contract at €55,000. Programmers and software development professionals are on the list, he has a relevant degree, and the salary is above €40,904. On paper, that fits the listed route.

Ngozi, a registered nurse in Enugu. Registered nurses are on the list. For nurses and midwives, the department asks for a third level degree or diploma that the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland accepts as enough for registration to practise in Ireland. If her offer is a public sector role under a pay agreement, the salary test is the agreed pay scale.

Emeka, a sales manager in Abuja. Sales management is not on the list. He could still qualify through the second route if a company offers him more than €68,911 and the role is not on the Ineligible List. Below that, he would need to look at the General Employment Permit instead.

None of this makes a permit certain. The department still checks the employer, the contract and the documents.

The rules on the job offer itself

The offer must be for at least 2 years. If the contract is shorter, the department points you to the General Employment Permit.

The employer must be a genuine business based and trading in Ireland, registered with Revenue and, where relevant, the Companies Registration Office. Either you or the employer can apply. The permit is tied to that employer, that occupation and the location on the permit.

You are expected to stay with your first employer for at least 9 months. The department can make exceptions, for example if you are made redundant.

Because these skills are in short supply, no Labour Market Needs Test is required. Your employer does not have to advertise the role first, which saves weeks.

Fees and processing times

The application fee is €1,000, about ₦1.5 million at the same CBN rate. If you are refused, 90% is refunded. The department asks for applications at least 12 weeks before the proposed start date.

Applications are processed in date order. On 22 October 2026, the department said it was processing Critical Skills applications received on 15 October 2026. That is a snapshot, so check the processing dates page when you apply. If the department asks for more information, you have 28 days to send it, and 28 days to ask for a review if you are refused.

Stamp 4 after two years, and your spouse can work

This is why so many people treat the Critical Skills permit as the best way to japa to Ireland. Immigration Service Delivery says you may be given Stamp 4 after 2 years on a valid Critical Skills permit, compared with 5 years on other employment permits. Stamp 4 lets you work for any employer without an employment permit and set up a business. Since 30 November 2023, you apply directly to the Department of Justice without a support letter from the Department of Enterprise.

Your family can come with you. Spouses and de facto partners of Critical Skills holders can be given Stamp 1G, which lets them work in Ireland without their own employment permit. They cannot be self-employed or run a business on that stamp, and it is renewed every year.
