What you need

  • Qualifying employment period

    Complete 21 months of employment in Ireland on the basis of a Critical Skills Employment Permit, a researcher Hosting Agreement, or a Multi-Site General Employment Permit as a Non-Consultant Hospital Doctor; or complete 57 months on the basis of General Employment Permits or Intra-Company Transfer Employments. The 57-month categories are not interchangeable with the 21-month categories when determining eligibility after 21 months.

How it works

  1. Get ready

    • Check your employment category and time worked

      Confirm that you have completed the applicable 21 or 57 months of employment in Ireland under a qualifying category.

    • Check when your IRP expires

      You can submit a renewal application up to 12 weeks before your current IRP expires.

      You’ll need: Current IRP card

    • Prepare your identity and address documents

      Make readable digital copies of your current valid passport’s biometric page and both sides of your current IRP card, and prepare proof of address.

    • Prepare your employment evidence

      Check the document list for your category and prepare the applicable permit evidence, a recent payslip, an employer letter dated within the last three months, and Employment Detail Summaries for the relevant years.

  2. Apply

    • Start your online renewal

      While present in Ireland, log into or create an online account and select the Registration Renewal form.

    • Upload documents and submit

      Upload the required documents, pay the applicable fee and submit the renewal application.

      You’ll need: Digital copies of required renewal documents

  3. Settle in

    • Keep your acknowledgement and await your new IRP

      Keep the acknowledgement email and application number; if the renewal succeeds, confirmation is sent by email and the new IRP card follows by post.
