Ireland graduate permission

Official name: Third Level Graduate Programme

This programme lets eligible non-EEA graduates who studied in Ireland remain to seek graduate-level work. It grants Stamp 1G permission for up to 12 months with a Level 8 award, or up to 24 months with a Level 9 or higher award, subject to the programme’s limits and renewal conditions.

  • Stay within the permission limit

    You must not already have exceeded seven years on non-EEA student permission in Ireland. For a Level 8 award, time on Stamp 2 as a student and Stamp 1G under this programme cannot exceed seven years in total; for a Level 9 or higher award, the corresponding overall limit is eight years.

  • Meet the repeat-use limit

    You cannot access the programme on more than two separate occasions. If you have used it before, you may re-enter on achieving a higher-level award, subject to the overall eight-year limit.

How it works

  1. Get ready

    • Complete your eligible Irish course

      1 day after you arrive

      Complete an ILEP-listed programme in Ireland and achieve a Level 8 or higher award from a recognised Irish awarding body.

    • Get proof of your award

      1 day after you arrive

      Obtain the award parchment or an official letter confirming that you achieved the award if graduation has not yet taken place.

    • Check your permission and deadline

      1 day after you arrive

      Check that your Stamp 2 permission and registration card are current and that you can apply within six months of your award notification.

      Prepare your passport’s biometric page, current IRP card, proof of course completion and proof of medical insurance.

  2. Apply

    • Apply online from Ireland

      1 day after you arrive

      Use the online registration renewal form to request the change from Stamp 2 to Stamp 1G, upload your documents and submit the application while you are in Ireland.

    • Pay the registration fee

      1 day after you arrive

      Pay the €300 registration fee when submitting the application.

  3. Settle in

    • Keep your acknowledgement

      1 day after you arrive

      Keep the acknowledgement email containing your application number and payment receipt while your application is processed.

    • Seek graduate-level employment

      1 day after you arrive

      Use your Stamp 1G period to seek graduate-level employment and, if appropriate, apply for an employment permit or research hosting agreement.

    • Apply for a further year if eligible

      1 day after you arrive

      If you have a Level 9 or higher award, apply to renew for a further 12 months and provide evidence of appropriate steps to access suitable graduate-level employment.
