This route is for people already living and working legally in Ireland who have completed at least 60 months of qualifying residence. Successful applicants receive permission to live and work in Ireland for a further five years without another employment permit.

How it works

  1. Get ready

    • Check your current permission and employment

      Confirm that you are legally resident and employed in Ireland before applying.

      You’ll need: Current Irish Residence Permit or GNIB card, Employment contract or employer letter

    • Gather your residence and work evidence

      Collect the passport, permit, employment and continuous-residence documents listed in the guidance.

      You’ll need: Full-colour copies of past and current passports or IRP cards showing immigration stamps, Copy of current IRP or GNIB card, Full-colour copies of all employment permits, Employment contract or employer letter detailing the start and terms of employment, Evidence of continuous residence, such as tenancy agreements, bank statements or State-issued documents

    • Complete and sign the form

      Complete every section of the Long Term Residency application form and sign its required declarations.

  2. Apply

    • Post your application

      Send the completed form and supporting documents to the Long Term Residence Section at the address in the guidance.

    • Remain legally resident and employed

      Remain in employment during the application process and keep your permission to reside in Ireland valid.

      You’ll need: Valid Irish Residence Permit

  3. Settle in

    • Complete your qualifying residence

      Complete at least 60 months of legal residence recorded by qualifying permissions.

      You’ll need: Past passports showing immigration stamps, Expired Irish Residence Permit cards

    • Pay the fee if approved

      If approved, pay €500 within 28 days of the approval letter to complete the application and receive your permission letter.

      Register the granted permission online and pay the applicable registration fee.
